Pedagogy
Economics lesson plans are written to follow the gradual release model. You will teach the economics concepts. Then, students will get to practice the concepts as a class or in groups. Then, they will complete independent economics activities designed for 2nd-4th grade students.
This is a complete unit. Everything you need to cover your economics standards is inside. The lesson plans are detailed, but give you flexibility to add, adjust, or remove activities depending on the time you have to complete each lesson. The unit includes more than you need for students to grasp each concept.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do you teach economics to elementary students?
Elementary economics lessons should use real-world examples, hands-on activities, discussions, and scenarios students encounter in daily life. You don’t have to be an expert, or really know anything about economics at all to successfully teach this unit. We include everything you need to help students grasp each topic.
Q: What economics concepts are included in this unit?
Students learn about wants and needs, markets, goods and services, producers and consumers, supply and demand, scarcity, opportunity cost, entrepreneurship, and personal finance basics.
Q: Why is economics important for kids to learn?
Economics helps students understand decision-making, trade, money, resources, and how communities and businesses function. It is the foundation for understanding more complicated social sciences as students get older.
Q: Is this economics unit aligned to standards?
Yes! The lessons support upper elementary social studies economics standards in Georgia and Texas, although they align across most state standards, and focus on critical thinking and real-world application.
Q: Are the economics activities engaging for students?
Yes! Students participate in simulations, discussion activities, reading passages, projects, and interactive practice designed to make economics meaningful.
Q: How long does the economics unit take to complete?
The pacing is flexible. There are 12 lessons included. Lessons can typically be completed in 50 minute sessions and can be adjusted to fit your schedule. We always include more activities than you will need for students to grasp each concept.
Q: Does this economics unit include assessments?
Yes. Each lesson includes a mini-quiz to assess each skill, as well as a longer unit assessment.
